Russian forces are facing severe setbacks in their attempts to capture the strategic city of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, and some Russian soldiers are even reportedly unwilling to take orders as the situation turns dire.
A report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) highlights the grim reality on the ground, with heavy casualties occurring in infantry-led attacks known as “meat assaults”.
These assaults are taking a particularly devastating toll on units composed of former convicts, known as Storm Z detachments.
The ISW’s report reveals that as much as 70 per cent of Storm Z detachment personnel are being killed in these gruelling attacks.
What’s more, these units lack crucial artillery support, making the situation even more dire.

Russian military bloggers on the ground have been documenting these disturbing developments and major setbacks for Putin’s troops.
They point out that the assaults lack proper planning and coordination, with Storm Z units often sent into battle without conducting reconnaissance or coordinating with nearby units.
Additionally, the absence of artillery support means wounded soldiers cannot be evacuated.

Despite these heavy losses, the Russian army is reportedly preparing for another “meat assault” near Avdiivka.
However, their limited equipment raises concerns about the potential for further losses in the upcoming battle.
