A pilot who went missing in a fighter jet crash has been found dead, according to a US defence official.
The F-18D Hornet jet was destroyed in a horror accident yesterday night (Thursday, August 24) near Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar in San Diego, California, prompting a frenzied search and rescue effort.
Sadly attempts to find the person in the aircraft came to a tragic end after a body was found.

The Second Marine Aircraft Wing in Cherry Point, North Carolina, has since confirmed the pilot was part of its unit and issued a statement, paying its condolences to the family of the deceased.
"Search and rescue recovered the U.S. Marine Corps pilot who has been confirmed deceased at the site," officials from the unit announced.
"The pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft. With a heavy heart, our condolences go to the Marine’s family during this time."
The crash was reported at a remote part of the military base near the Interstate 15 highway shortly before midnight.
Audio recordings heard by Broadcastify suggested the pilot ejected just before the jet crashed.
The tragic incident occurred during a training flight and the cause of the smash is currently unknown.
