Tsunami alert issued for Japan after huge magnitude 6.6 earthquake

Families in Japan have been told to brace themselves after a huge 6.6 magnitude earthquake prompted a tsunami warning.

The quake reportedly hit the coast just off the Izu Islands at around 11pm local time on Wednesday. The epicentre is said to be around 10km deep.

It was reportedly close to Torishima, an unhabited island in the volcanic parts of the Izu Islands. 

Another earthquake was also reported just off the Japanese coast yesterday with a magntitude 5.5 quake being deteced off Honshu.
