Denver police have arrested a man suspected of a shooting at a homeless encampment in the 1700 block of Logan Street in August, injuring two people.
Eugeneo Hinojosa, 55, was arrested Sept. 12 on suspicion of three counts of first-degree attempted murder, according to jail and court records.
The shooting was reported at 1:34 p.m. Aug. 21 when Denver Police Department gunshot detectors detected 10 gunshots and bystanders called 911 to report shots fired.
Witnesses told police that a woman was standing outside her tent when Hinojosa approached her with a gun, yelling about wanting his keys back.
He then allegedly opened fire on the encampment, injuring two people, including 28-year-old Army veteran Josef Steele, who was in his tent trying to shield his sister from the bullets when he was hit in the back. Another victim was shot once in the right leg.
The woman standing outside her tent knew Hinojosa well, according to the arrest affidavit.
The encampment, which spanned parts of 18th Avenue, Logan and Pennsylvania streets, was cleared two days later by city officials.
Hinojosa, who was identified as homeless by Denver police, is in custody at the Downtown Detention Center and is set to appear in court on Oct. 9.
