Google's newly-updated Artificial Intelligence-powered software has named the UK's worst place to live – and its bad news for a Bedfordshire .
Called Bard, the AI has picked Luton as the worst place in the country, and has done so for five very specific reasons – high crime rates, poor air quality, lack of investment in infrastructure, high unemployment rate and high poverty rates. Luton, famous for having an airport and a Premier League football club, has often been named high up in lists of the UK's worst of grimmest places.
But now Google's software has given it the seal of (dis)approval. It states: “Luton is frequently criticized for its high crime rates, poor air quality, and lack of investment in infrastructure.

“It also has a relatively high unemployment rate and a large proportion of its population living in poverty. It has one of the highest crime rates in the UK, particularly for violent crime. This can make residents feel unsafe and can deter investment in the town, and it is home to a number of major roads and industrial estates, which contribute to poor air quality – this can have a negative impact on the health of residents.
“Luton has been criticized for the lack of investment in its infrastructure, such as roads, public transport, and schools, which can make it difficult for residents to get around and access essential services.”

Bard claimed that the area's “relatively high” unemployment rate has a “major” source of stress for locals. The official unemployment rate for the area, as of March 2023, is 6.2%, which is 2% higher than the national average.
The AI added: “Luton has a large proportion of its population living in poverty, which can lead to a number of social problems, such as crime and homelessness.”
However, it did go on to clarify that Luton “is not all bad”.

“Despite its reputation as one of the worst places to live in the UK, Luton has a number of good things to offer. It has a diverse population and a number of positive attributes,” it went on.
“Such as its proximity to London and its relatively low cost of living. Luton has a number of parks and green spaces, including Stockwood Discovery Centre, Wardown Park, and the Barton Hills National Nature Reserve. These spaces are great for getting outdoors and enjoying nature.

Bard, appearing to try and dig itself out of the hole it has made, added: “If you are considering moving to a new town, it is important to do your research and visit the town in person to get a feel for it. You should also consider your own personal preferences and needs, such as the type of job you are looking for, the quality of schools, and the cost of living.”
