Cafe boss who beat man to death for peeing on his leg jailed for just 18 months

A cafe boss who killed a man for peeing on his leg will spend just 18 months in jail for the "inexcusable" act.

Gede Wijaya, who owns a venue in Bali, Indonesia, was enjoying a boozy night out with Australian holidaymaker Troy Scott Johnston on February 23, 2023, when the evening took a sour turn.

Denpasar District Court heard the pair were drinking a strong local liquor, arak, when Wijaya, 39, noticed the Aussie man had started urinating on his leg and told him to stop.

Johnston, 40, then started throwing glasses at the man and picked up a barstool, which he aimed at the hospitality boss.

Wijaya wrestled the chair from the angry tourist and hit him over the head with it, causing serious injuries – but rather than call an ambulance or for medical assistance, Wijaya instead left Johnston at the bar.

His body was later found there after he died as a result of his wounds.

Judges hearing the case accepted Wijaya had acted in self-defence after Johnston started attacking him.

However, they ruled the cafe owner's decision not to help his assailant after he was injured was unacceptable.

Judge Gede Putra Astawa said during the August 24 trial: "Leaving the victim alone is inexcusable. The defendant could have called for an ambulance to assist the victim.

"His self-defence led to someone being injured and losing their life."

Wijaya was convicted of maltreatment resulting in death and was handed an 18-month sentence.

However, Wijaya had been held in custody prior to his trial and judges said this time would be deducted from the overall sentence, meaning the time he spends behind bars will be even shorter.

Prosecutor Si Ayu Alit Sutari Dewi, recommended three years in prison for the crime and didn't rule out an appeal as the trial came to an end.
