Ukraine’s top ground forces commander has announced that his forces will soon launch a counter-offensive against Russia’s Wagner mercenaries, who have been leading Moscow’s brutal winter campaign in eastern Ukraine. According to Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Wagner mercenaries are “losing considerable strength and are running out of steam”, which presents a unique opportunity for the Ukrainian forces to strike back.

Speaking confidently about their upcoming plans, he said, “Very soon, we will take advantage of this opportunity, as we did in the past near Kyiv, Kharkiv, Balakliya and Kupiansk”, referring to successful Ukrainian counter-offensives in 2022 that resulted in the recapture of vast stretches of land.

The Wagner group, which is believed to be composed of Russian mercenaries and private military contractors, has been a key player in the conflict, supporting Russian-backed separatists in the Donbas region. However, with its strength dwindling, Ukraine sees an opening to turn the tide of the conflict in their favour.
