Woman ‘pours boiling water on sleeping boyfriend’ and ‘watches skin fall off’

A woman posted a Snapchat video of her pouring boiling water on her boyfriend as he slept on their sofa, a court heard.

Alexis Sykes, 22, allegedly described "watching his skin fall of his arms" after refusing to drive him to hospital and hid his car keys.

She is accused of sharing the clip with the caption: "I kinda feel bad now because he got 2&3rd degree Burns from face to waist & they rushin him to burn center but oh well (shrugging shoulder emoji) BITCH (emoji blowing kiss) n still cried & beg me to drive him to hospital."

Sykes, of Roselle in Chicago, US, was arrested following an 11-day manhunt more than 700 miles away in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi.

A $250,000 (£183k) arrest warrant was issued six days following the incident in the early hours of January 2 and she was released from court on a $500,000 (£366k) bond on Tuesday, February 2.

A statement from DuPage County State’s Attorney said: "It is alleged that in the early morning hours of January 2, 2021, Sykes poured a pot of boiling water on her boyfriend while he slept on the couch in the apartment they shared in Roselle.

"It is alleged that Sykes recorded herself committing this act and posted the video to Snapchat with the following caption, 'I kinda feel bad now because he got 2&3rd degree Burns from face to waist & they rushin him to burn center but oh well (shrugging shoulder emoji) BITCH (emoji blowing kiss) n still cried & beg me to drive him to hospital.'"

The statement went on: "It is further alleged that after scalding the victim, Sykes hid the victim’s car keys from him as the victim described watching his skin fall off his arms.

"It is alleged that the victim was finally able to get his keys and drove himself to a local hospital where shortly thereafter, he was transported to Loyola University Medical Center Burn Unit where he spent nearly two weeks and underwent skin graft surgery to treat his burns."

"She was located in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi on January 19 and extradited back to DuPage County to face the charges against her."

Skyes has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Battery by Caustic Substance and two counts of Aggravated Domestic Battery.

State attorney Robert Berlin said: "The charges against Ms Sykes are very disturbing.

"Dousing a sleeping man with boiling water causing serious, painful injury, as alleged in this case, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Roselle Police Chief Steve Herron added: "This case was brought to resolution by the hard work and persistence of our detectives, who put the case together and were able to locate this offender who fled the state."

Sykes’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 22 for arraignment in front of Judge McGimpsey who set bond in the amount of $500,000 (£366k) with 10% to apply.
