What Kate Middleton and Prince William cant do as members of the Royal Family

The future king may be set to rule the nation but there are certain things that Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton cannot do as royals, even if it means they go hungry at meal times with the Queen.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as well as other members of the Royal Family, have strict rules to abide by in both private and in public.

The Queen sets the standard for all the royals to follow and for some of the rules make Her Majesty in charge.

One particular rule can often see royals go hungry as the Queen is head of the dinner table and even decides when meal time is over.

As reported by Express, all royal family members must wait until she begins her meal before they begin to enjoy their own.

If the Queen stops eating, the rest of the family and even guests must stop, even if they are not finished with their meals.

The Queen is also said to be the reason why Kate and William cannot eat potatoes due to Her Majesty not being a fan of carbohydrates, according to former Buckingham Palace chef Darren McGrady.

The chef told Marie Claire that the Queen has a "no pasta, potatoes, or rice for dinner” policy.

There are also several other rules that Kate and William must adhere to, including how one would sit.

Kate is not allowed to cross her legs in public, no matter what and instead must opt for a position known as the “duchess slant.”

The pose, which sees a female royal sit with knees to the side, is used to avoid any potential slip ups.

Speaking to the People, Myka Meier, the founder of Beaumont Etiquette, said: “By slightly slanting the knees to create a zig-zag effect when wearing a dress or skirt, your legs are angled so that the camera only shoots the sides of your legs and protects your modesty.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are also not permitted to take selfies with people unless they are also royals.

According to a Telegraph interview with the US ambassador Matthew Barzun in 2014, he revealed the Queen was the reason behind the ban.

He claims Her Majesty told him that she did not like mobile phones and she found selfie’s “strange”.

There is also one rule which appears to have been set by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge themselves.

William and Kate are rarely seen showing affection or even holding hands but there appears to be no royal protocol for this according to etiquette expert Myka Meier.

He said it is more the couple choosing to “remain professional” when attending public events.
