Speaking to reporters at Cop26, Ms Ocasio-Cortez was asked for her verdict on US representative being worried that US credibility on climate change was hurt by Donald Trump.

She was asked whether the US has “recovered” from the previous administration to which she replied: “No, we have not recovered our moral authority.

“I believe that we are taking steps but… we have to actually deliver the action in order to get the respect and authority internationally to get the credit.

“We have to draw down initiatives to get credit for being [good] on climate change, it’s really that simple.

“But you know in terms of you can we get this done? What are the stakes here? I do think it’s important to know that the President very much has put very high stakes on getting this agenda.”

Ms Ocasio-Cortez then made reference to the Build Back Better act which is part of Joe Biden’s huge infrastructure drive.

The bill, which narrowly passed after months of political wrangling, would show how Mr Biden’s leadership can be respected internationally, says Ms Ocasio-Cortez.

She added getting the bill would increase the momentum for Democrat leaders to become a stronger authority on subjects.

Again, she referenced how America has not fully recovered before concluding: “I believe when we pass the Build Back Better act, we absolutely will become and regain our position leading climate emissions.

“But there is still more to be done.”

One of Donald Trump’s first acts as president was to take the US out of the Paris climate agreement and after a three-year delay, it was finally introduced.

Mr Trump also called climate change activists “prophets of doom” who should be ignored.

The former president also skipped a G7 meeting on climate change and said he would not jeopardize the US economy on “dreams”.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who is also at Cop26 commented on the Trump years and said they were “unfortunate”.

Ms Pelosi also echoed Ms Ocasio-Cortez sentiments and said America had a lot to do to win back its reputation on taking climate change seriously.
