Pockets of unrest have been found across the capital ahead of the Summit, which opens today, after thousands of people took to the streets on Sunday to register their discontent. Demonstrators called for NATO to be dissolved and for military bases maintained by the United States in Spain to be closed. Banners with the words “No to NATO, No to War, For Peace” were held as they marched through the city. Concha Hoyos, a retired Madrid resident, told AlJazeera: “I am fed up [with] this business of arms and killing people. The solution they propose is more arms and wars and we always pay for it. So no NATO, no [army] bases, let the Americans go and leave us alone without wars and weapons.” NATO leaders will meet in Madrid to discuss a plan on how to manage the Russian invasion of Ukraine after putting 300,000 troops at high readiness on Monday in response to the aggression. It is also expected to consider the bid, opposed by alliance-member Turkey, for Finland and Sweden to join the group.
