Mesa County Sheriff’s deputy shoots man in Grand Junction

Sheriff’s deputies shot a man suspected of setting a vehicle on fire at his property in Grand Junction in western Colorado, and on Thursday a team of investigators was preparing to look into what happened, according to Grand Junction police.

Mesa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to calls that a man who lived in the 2900 block of Sandra Avenue started the fire around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, the police said in a news release. Firefighters came to put out the fire. When deputies tried to contact the man, “an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the police said.

Firefighters took the man to a hospital. No information on his condition was released.

The deputy has been placed on paid leave, police said. A criminal investigation launched by a 21st Judicial District team will determine whether the use of force was legally justified, and police said a separate internal investigation also will begin.
