Meet the bloke who ensures over 100,000 punters get free drinks at Wetherspoons

A bloke who created the extremely popular "Wetherspoons The Game!!" Facebook page that allows over 100,000 people to get free drinks at Wetherspoons says he came up with the idea at the pub.

Chris Illman, 40, from Fareham, was having a drink at his local Wetherspoons when he decided to try a trick he'd seen someone do online to get free food and drink to the table – after it worked, he knew he had to share the secret.

"I'd read an article about someone going out for their 21st birthday party and uploading their table number and getting sent loads of stuff," Chris told The Daily Star.

"Me and my mate thought 'why not let's try it,' and we got sent a table full of stuff.

"I knew then I had to start the page and it’s just snowballed from there."

The popular page, which now has over 100,000 members, invites people visiting the pub chain to post their table number and venue so strangers all over the country can buy them food and drink through the app.

"People really go for it," Chris said.

The page is full of people of all ages posting their table numbers and stories, connecting with generous strangers over Facebook who want to treat them.

The concept of Wetherspoons The Game!! is so popular in fact, that father-of-two Chris has organised 10 charity nights through the platform to feed the homeless from pubs across the country.

A "feed the homeless" night Chris organised in Liverpool raised over £6,000 worth of food and treats for people in the local area.

Members of the page used the Wetherspoons app to send pizzas, soft drinks, and savoury snacks to the Liverpool pub, which was then distributed to the homeless by volunteers.

Proud creator Chris has expanded his roster of pages now too, with his most recent page allowing super generous people to buy other people's Amazon Wishlists – Wishlist The Game!.

Chris said: "It’s going absolutely crazy at the moment.

"It’s been going just over a week and it’s got over 700 members and people are being sent loads of stuff."

The Wetherspoons page is full of daily acts of generosity but it was recently revealed that the page even found two people love.

Back in 2019, Chris Griffiths was taken out by his sister to the Foley Arms Wetherspoons in Malvern shortly after he'd been split up with and needed cheering up.

His sister Beki posted on The Wetherspoons Game page to try and get some free drinks and have some fun.

That's when Lauren commented: "YOUR BROTHER IS SO FIT!"

The comment gained lots of traction as Beki and Lauren had a humorous back and forth about Chris and Lauren's potential future relationship.

Fast forward two years and the couple who were once strangers met, got married, and fell in love.

In an update post, Lauren proudly states: "UPDATE: he actually did end up falling in love with my psychopath ways and we now have a Wetherspoons Game baby."
