Mannequins eerily sway like ghosts as catastrophic earthquake kills thousands

Turkish shop floor CCTV released in the wake of a huge earthquake that killed 5,000 people, shows how the seismic activity made mannequins eerily sway like ghosts.

On Monday (February 6) a 7.8 magnitude quake hit Turkey and Syria, and has killed thousands, with thousands more missing under the rubble.

The first quake was centred in the town of Pazarcik in Turkey's Kahramanmaras province at a depth of 9.6km, and led to several powerful aftershocks.

A second quake, only marginally weaker, followed a few hours later. The EMSC said it struck around 100km to the north of the first, just outside the town of Ekinozu, at a depth of 2km.

It was followed by an aftershock with a magnitude of 6.0 just 12 minutes later.

Haber Turk shared footage from Elazığ, a city in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, showing the devastation caused in local businesses.

In several of the clips clothes shop mannequins are seen eerily swaying like ghostly figures.

Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has described the shocking twin earthquakes as the worst disaster for the country since 1939, when an earthquake killed over 32,000 people and injured more than 100,000.

He added that "search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched" to the areas hit after images showed entire buildings reduced to rubble.

"We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage," he wrote on Twitter.

President Erdogan also said that more than 45 nations had already offered assistance to his country. The White House has announced that it would immediately be sending two 79-person search-and-rescue teams.

It is thought that the time the first quake occurred (4.17am local time) could contribute to the death toll being high given most people were asleep and inside.
