Three people were rushed to hospital after a brawl broke out at a sports event, allegedly involving guns and knives.

Police were called to the Derby Kabaddi grounds shortly before 4pm yesterday (Sunday, August 20) on Elvaston Lane, Alvaston.

Footage shared on X (formerly Twitter) appeared to show huge crowds fleeing from the scene. What sounded like gunshots could be heard.

One eye witness claimed they saw a man get shot before being attacked with a sword. The Mirror reports they said: "One man was shot and then when on the floor chopped up with a sword."

Others said two opposing gangs were responsible for the chaos.

Armed officers and some 20 police cars were spotted at the scene. People were told to leave the event, although some reportedly had to abandon their cars as they were blocked in.

A police spokesperson said yesterday: "We were called to a large scale disturbance in Elvaston Lane, Alvaston at 15.51 on Sunday 20 August.

"Three people have been injured, one seriously. They have all been taken to hospital.

"There is a large police presence in the area and officers are expected to remain at the scene for some time.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information, is asked to contact us quoting the reference 739 of 20 August."

The Daily Star has contacted Derbyshire Constabulary for a further update.

Kabaddi, also known as Kaudi, is an ancient contact sport that is popular in South Asia. It involves two teams of seven.

The objective is for one player, the raider, to run into the opposing team's half of the court and touch out their players before returning to their own half of the court, all without being tackled by the defenders in 30 seconds.
