Man beaten and made to drink own urine after villagers accuse him of witchcraft

A man was brutally beaten up and made to drink his own urine after villagers accused him of practising witchcraft.

The victim, Hadibandhu Bagarti, is said to be traumatised after the attack in Odisha’s Balangir district, India.

After village locals started to become ill and they couldn’t work out why, a meeting of the village heads was called.

They decided the mystery illness was down to Hadibandhu’s sorcery practise and made the decision “to punish him”, reports catchnews.

On July 3, wacky villagers armed with sticks went to his house and carried out a ruthless public beating in front of neighbours.

Hadibandhu’s brother, Manmoth Bagarti, told India Today TV: “They dragged (him) out of our house and thrashed him badly.

“They forced him to drink urine and eat excreta. I have named all those who thrashed him.”

Suspects from the village are in custody after Sindhekela cops became aware of the incident when a video of the horrific beating went viral.

"Three people have been arrested, they were charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code," Balangir Police SP Nitin Kushalkar told India Today.

Another relative of the victim, Seema, said police officers detained both the victim and the attackers at first.

She claimed: “Later they took the victim to the hospital for treatment after we pleaded for medical care."

Its not the only case of this nature in India and last Sunday a 63-year-old widow in Mayurbhanj was murdered over allegedly practising witchcraft.

Her headless body was found outside her village, reports Hindustan Times.

And last month, a man in Ganjam was suspected of practising witchcraft so he was beaten to death and forced to eat human poo.
