Man arrested after allegedly chasing people with machete before setting fire to apartment, police say

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of felony menacing and arson Monday after allegedly chasing people around a Wheat Ridge apartment complex with a machete before setting his apartment on fire, authorities said.

The man, who was not identified, ran from Wheat Ridge officers when they arrived Monday to the Iris Apartments on West 51st Place, police said on Facebook. He then barricaded himself in the apartment, which he set on fire.

After 17 minutes of negotiation, the man tossed his machete and another knife and climbed out of the apartment building, where he was arrested, police said.

Arvada Fire put out the flames, which did not spread from the unit, the fire department said on Facebook.
