Laughing gas dealer has people convinced he used his own supply in mugshot

A laughing gas dealer has internet users sure he had taken some of his own supply as he pulled a peculiar face during his police mugshot.

Social media users were stunned to see Robert Russ, 46, in a peculiar mugshot that showed the Cardiff local gurning his face.

The 46-year-old had been dispensing canisters of so-called happy gas and was rumbled by South Wales Police, who found 700 at his property and in his car, as well as 25,200 in a warehouse lock-up nearby.

Russ told police he had been dealing the drugs to pay bills, but some social media users are convinced he was using his own supply.

A less-than flattering mugshot showed the laughing gas dealer, with one user writing: "Judging by the photo they didn't get to him in time and he managed to consume the lot."

Another joked: "Whoa, by the looks of it, he's consumed most of his profit."

The small, silver canisters Russ was distributing are usually inhaled through party balloons and found discarded in parks and open spaces.

Although there have only been 56 reported deaths from the use of nitrous oxide between 2001 and 2020, doctors have warned of serious problems and even poisoning through its use.

Admitting to possessing a psychoactive substance with intent to supply, acquiring criminal property and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance, Russ was jailed for 32 months.

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: "It has several legitimate uses but when inhaled it can cause unconsciousness or death due to a lack of oxygen.

"It is illegal, in England and Wales, for anyone to sell nitrous oxide to people under-18, if they think they are likely to be inhaling it. Mixing alcohol with nitrous oxide can be fatal."

The small canisters are also known as nos.
