“Known fugitive” dies after Larimer County deputies shot suspect following vehicle chase

A vehicle chase involving Larimer County deputies led to a fatal shooting Thursday after the fleeing suspect fired shots at pursing deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident unfolded at about 6:30 p.m., in the area of Colorado 60 and Weld County Road 38,  when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle in which a passenger was a “known fugitive,” according to a news release from the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team, which is investigating the shooting.

The driver fled and deputies chased the vehicle, the release said. “During the vehicle pursuit, the fugitive in the vehicle fired multiple rounds at the pursuing deputies.”

The vehicle stopped near Weld County Road 38 and Interstate 25, and the suspect fled on foot into a field where he was shot dead. The man’s name will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office. The release did not say what the man was wanted for prior to Thursday’s shooting.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Detective Fidel Sanchez with the Greeley Police Department at 970-351-5394.
