El Chapos nephew gunned down and killed while partying in busy town square

The nephew of infamous Mexican drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán has been gunned down.

Edel Guzmán Martínez, 36, was partying in the main square of Guadalupe y Calvo, a town in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, in the early hours of Thursday morning (September 15) when the attack took place.

Edel was rushed to a local hospital but died soon after arriving because of his wounds.

Ministerial and military sources confirmed that the victim was in fact the nephew of El Chapo, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel until his arrest in 2016.

According to Blog del Narco Mexico, those same sources indicate that two people have been detained in relation to the murder.

Hours after Edel was killed, the State Investigation Agency received a report of another dead body in Guadalupe y Calvo.

The unidentified male victim is said to be between the ages of 25 and 30. He was found with a stab wound in his neck, according to Borderland Beat.

Edel is the subject of a narcocorrido – a genre of Mexican music with lyrics relating to drug trafficking or dedicated to specific drug lords – released by Los Alegres del Barranco in 2020.

The lyrics explain that he was given the nickname "El Cuñado" (meaning "the brother-in-law") when his uncle gave him "the key".

"From Culiacán to the Sierra, the path is short, and they often see it through Badiraguato," relates to the fact he lived in the municipality of Badiraguato in Sinaloa (which has been confirmed by authorities since his death).

"Cheerful and in love, with a weapon to defend himself," states another lyric.
