An Aurora police officer involved in a fatal crash in a patrol vehicle has been charged with vehicular homicide in the case.
Officer Eduardo Landeros, who was hired in February 2022, resigned on April 25, a day before a scheduled internal affairs interview on the incident, the Aurora Police Department said in a statement Thursday.
Landeros is charged with vehicular homicide reckless driving, according to the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office.
At about 8:20 p.m. March 4, Landeros was responding to a 911 burglary call and was driving north on South Chambers Road when his vehicle, a marked Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, crashed with a Toyota Corolla in the intersection at East Bates Avenue, police said.
The patrol vehicle rolled onto its roof, and Landeros was trapped inside. Emergency responders with Aurora Fire Rescue took Landeros and the other driver, 44-year-old Elias Anderson, of Aurora, to the hospital where Anderson died.
Landeros suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was placed on paid medical leave, and then administrative leave, before his resignation.
The Colorado State Patrol investigated the fatal crash. An internal investigation by Aurora police is ongoing.
