The political strategist Isaac Levido, who oversaw Boris Johnson’s landslide election victory in 2019, has been dropped by the Tories. This decision will potentially enable Liz Truss’s chief of staff Mark Fullbrook to take the reins and run the next election campaign.

Many in the party have been left perplexed by the move, especially given the slump in support for the Conservative Party in the polls over the past week.

Former director of communications at Downing Street Lee Cain tweeted: “Isaac Levido and Michael Brooks spearheaded the best election campaign in decades.

Mr Cain, who also worked alongside Mr Johnson as head of broadcast on the Vote Leave campaign, added: “This is a monumental error.”

Mr Fullbrook’s track record adds further cause for concern, as he spearheaded Zac Goldsmith’s unsuccessful bid for London mayor.

According to the Guardian, his lobbying company may be put in charge of running the campaign, which would be very lucrative for Mr Fullbrook’s business.

A senior Conservative source said: “This would be an indefensible decision at any time.

“Isaac and his team took the Conservatives to our best result since the 1980s, whereas Mark Fullbrook’s last campaign was losing the London mayoral race badly.

“For Liz Truss to abandon Isaac and hand a lucrative contract to her chief of staff beggars belief, especially given the chaos of the last few days in Birmingham.

“I am yet to speak to anyone who thinks this is anything other than crazy.”

Another source from the party added: “In 2019 we won seats we have never held before. The red wall turned blue.

“If there was one man responsible for that more than Boris Johnson, it was Isaac Levido.

“Now team Truss have axed him in some murky deal. It stinks and means it’s even more likely we will be consigned to opposition at the next election.”

Mr Levido was a protege of the controversial Australian strategist Lynton Crosby.

Known as the “Wizard of Oz”, Sir Lynton oversaw a Tory victory at the 2015 general election and Boris Johnson’s successful campaigns for London mayor in 2008 and 2012.
