Last week Nicola Sturgeon’s vaccine programme came under fire for turning away eligible Scots under new guidance for those who wanted to receive their booster jabs. And this week nurses have been left seething after new reports showed dentists and other healthcare professionals have been paid up to seven times more than them to administer Covid jabs. NHS nurses have been on the frontlines of hospitals across the country since the start of the pandemic nearly two years ago.

BBC Scotlands’s The Nine revealed that NHS nurses are being paid less for injecting patients with the Coronavirus vaccine compared to dentists.

NHS nurse Evelyn told the programme: “Don’t get me wrong the beginning of the programme it was all hands on deck and we really needed people as much as possible.

“But the programme’s been going for over a year now and yet there are still people being paid that enhanced amount and I can’t understand why that is the case”

She added: “it’s so sad, I’ve been a nurse for 45 years and I don’t think I’ve ever felt as bad about things going into the vaccine clinics.”

Journalist Nick Sheridan spoke with SNP Health Secretary Humza Yousaf to find out why there was so much disparity between different healthcare workers over vaccine pay.

Mr Yousaf said: “The key is to increase our capacity for vaccinations, so we are doing that.

“For example, Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board trained 100 official vaccinators last week.

“And this week there will be training an additional 100 on top of that so 200 additional vaccinators by Greater Glasgow and Clyde alone.”

“We’re increasing capacity we’re going to healthcare students, we’re going to independent contractors, dentists optometrists, and whoever else to try and increase that capacity.”

According to the data, NHS Borders paid out £94,417 to 12 dentists for them to inoculate Scots with the vaccine, approximately seven times more than nurses.

Fort Valley Board paid independent contractors an average 4.5 times more than NHS staff.

Mr Sheridan broke down the statistics of rates of pay healthcare professionals had been receiving from vaccinating members of the Scottish public

Mr Sheridan said: “Four health boards paid these contractors more than they paid current and former nurses to deliver the jab.”

“So from the start of the vaccine programme in November last year to August this year, NHS borders paid 12 dentists a total of £94,417.”

“That’s more than seven times more per dentist than the nurses got, in Forth Valley meanwhile the average four and a half times more than an independent contractor remember dentists but also opticians too.”

“Shetland and Grandpion also paid more to independent contractors, out of the remaining ten health boards six paid nurses more.”
