GB News host Neil Oliver derided the Government’s latest restrictions, such as mandatory face coverings in retail and public transport in England, as “manipulation and mass hypnosis”. Boris Johnson imposed the latest measures in the wake of the Omicron variant of Covid, insisting the measures were “temporary and precautionary”. Mr Oliver claimed that “with fear on the wane it was plainly time to cast another spell” on the British public.

On Saturday, it was confirmed that two Omicron cases had been detected in Essex and Nottingham.

The new variant was first reported from South Africa on Wednesday, with early evidence suggesting it has a higher reinfection risk.

In his monologue, Mr Oliver told viewers: “Here we go again.

“With Christmas on the horizon, a holiday that should be a time for families to put the past behind them and look towards the future, a new variant of the virus has seemingly been despatched from poor old Africa as the gift no one asked for and no one wants.

“After months of messages of fear from our governments and their favoured scientists, here comes more of the same. We can only presume that too many of us were seen to be awakening from the toxic trance into which we had been put by propaganda from the nudge unit.”

He continued: “Fear has been the key to nearly two years of unprecedented power for politicians and their scientists.

“Fear has also blinded people to the reality of manipulation and mass hypnosis used to make them, and to keep them, compliant.

“But with that fear on the wane, losing its power to do harm, much like the virus was losing its power, it was plainly time to cast another spell.”

Mr Oliver criticised the logic put forward by the Government to get booster vaccines.

He said: “I have heard it said today that the new variant might sidestep the vaccines – and that it is, therefore, vital for everyone to get their booster shot. How does that work?

“The vaccines might not stop this variant, so take more vaccines?”

He received a divided response from viewers, as a clip of the monologue went viral online.

@JulieAmanda1957 agreed with the claims, tweeting: “Clearly Govt felt they’re losing control & the public were regaining their sense of normality back.”

@wibblyteapot echoed this: “Well put. When I see Chris Whitty stand up on the stage, with more waffle, I don’t see a scientist. It’s the Wizard. ‘We need to cast the fear spell, and get them to comply’.”

However, others passionately disagreed, as @joelabery tweeted: “All the credible science shows that masks do help reduce the risk of transmission of the virus.

“Neil Oliver needs to check his facts and the channel should have the responsibility to check before a presenter feeds disinformation to its watchers.”

@deegarvin_sara simply retorted: “Propaganda…are you serious?”

@twitdwood added: “I just cannot watch nor listen to him.”
