Health Secretary Matt Hancock has resigned his role in Government after he was caught having relations with one of his senior aides in Whitehall. Mr Hancock has been under increasing pressure to step down from the role after CCTV images emerged showing him embracing Gina Coladangelo in a Department of Health office. The video footage and images are dated two weeks before the Government eased the restrictions on social distancing on May 17.
Mr Hancock issued a statement on Friday, in which he said: “I accept that I breached the social distancing guidance in these circumstances, I have let people down and am very sorry.
“I remain focused on working to get the country out of this pandemic and would be grateful for privacy for my family.”
This isn’t the first time Mr Hancock has faced scrutiny this year after it was recently revealed he broke the ministerial code with an NHS contract awarded to people close to him.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s senior aide, Dominic Cummings, also leaked WhatsApp texts between him and Mr Johnson in which the Health Secretary was referred to as “f****** hopeless”.
