The Labour leader got behind the wheel of a lorry when he visited Mantra Learning in Middleton, Greater Manchester. He used the photo opportunity to attack Boris Johnson’s Government over its handling of the chronic shortage of lorry drivers – which has caused supply chain problems across the UK.

Unfortunately for the embattled Labour leader, after donning a pink hi-vis jacket he spectacularly failed a mock driving test.

After the instructor told him to go “hard left”, Sir Keir attempted to reverse into a space between some cones.

It appears his mirror, signal and manoeuvre may be slightly off after he pranged a metal barrier – sending it crashing to the floor.

The instructor then told the Labour leader: “You’d have failed your test.”

Sir Keir replied: “OK, very good.”

As footage of the gaffe went viral, many social media users couldn’t help but have a dig at the politician.

Conservative Kevin Edger wrote: “Keir Starmer has failed at pretty much everything then.

“In hindsight, I’m sure he would have done it differently and passed.”

Jamie O’Rourke wrote: “That’s basically a big box van like a Tesco/Asda etc delivery van.

“If you can’t drive and park a big van with a fixed cab, you probably shouldn’t even have a driving licence.”

Donahue Rogers joked: “The instructor might as well have asked a fish to climb a tree.”

And user Curiouscat said: “He failed the test because he couldn’t steer left. What an apt metaphor.”

During the visit, Sir Keir met with HGV driving instructors alongside Shadow Transport Secretary Jim McMahon and Oldham Council Leader Arooj Shah.

Slamming Mr Johnson’s Government over the shortages, he said: “This is a crisis made in Downing Street but so far being mopped up by businesses and workers.

“This government must break the habit of their decade in power by acting with the urgency required before yet another Christmas is ruined by Tory failure.”

Also while at the training facility, Sir Keir said that the government should apologise to the public after a report into the government’s handling of the pandemic said errors were made in the early stages that cost human lives.
